For each major redesign, a vehicle is said to begin a new "generation."

The Kia Rio is front-wheel drive with independent front suspension, a semi-independent rear suspension, 14-inch wheels on the Base and LX trims, and 15-inch on the SX trim. It's powered by a 110-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder with continuously variable valve timing. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic (excluding the base trim). Safety features include seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags and front seat belt pretensioners.

The following model years make up the most recent Kia Rio generations:
2006 - 2009 Kia Rio
Major changes included: The second generation Rio is powered by a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine. The LX trim adds power steering, air conditioning, and a CD player on top of the Base features. The SX trim adds a few aesthetic touches such as alloy wheels and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Rio is also available in hatchback form, called the Rio5.
